1993 yılında Shagrath(Stian Thorensen) ve Erkekjetter Silenoz( Sven Atle Kopperud) tarafında norveçte kuruldu."Karanlık Şato"Türkçe kelime anlamıdır. Shagrath-Erkekjetter Silenoz-Brynjard Tristan-Stian Aarstad-Tjodalv grubun ilk elemanlarıdır.Gruptan bugüne kadar ayrılanlar ise şöyle olmuştur:Jamie Stinson(Astennu)"guitars-- Pål Ivar(Brynjard Tristan)"bass"-- Nagash"bass"--Stian Aarstad"keyboards"--Tjodalv"drums"--Nicholas Barker"drums".Dimmu Borgir bugüne kadar çok iyi albümler piyasaya sürmüştür.Tüm kadroları ve tüm albümleri çok iyidir ama en zirvede oldukları yıllar 1997-2003 dür.Özellikle belirtilmesi gereken Dimmu Borgir kadrosu:Shagrath-ErkekjetterSilenoz-Galder-Simen Hestæs-Mustis-Nicholas Barker mükemmel işler yapmıştır.2003 yılının son perdelerinde Nicholas yitirmeleri grubun kaydadeğer bir kayıbı olmuştur.Şuanda ise Shagrath-Erkekjetter Silenoz-Galder-SimenHestæs ve Mustis grupta görev yapmaktadır...
